Thorndale Healthy Custom Home

Our clients came to us with an ask: build us our dream home, a chemical free retreat.

It was imperative we understood how important designing and building a healthy home was to them particularly knowing one of the homeowners has a rare autoimmune disease. Volatile Organic Compounds or VOCs were a concern due to their ability to cause long-term health problems. VOCs can be found in some paints and adhesives and can be airborne for long periods of time. Therefore, we sourced products that were either VOC-free or contained the lowest possible amounts with a strong focus on locally produced materials. We used low or no VOC cabinets, paint, hardwood and Marmoleum flooring. Marmoleum is made of non-toxic materials such as solified linseed oil and pine rosin, making it the perfect material for this project. Locally sourced pine was used both outside and inside the home. We also added a stainless steel island in the kitchen. Stainless steel is non-toxic, durable, easy to clean, affordable and looks great!

In addition to healthy products, the couple wanted to reduce their home’s energy use. The position of the house on the land was intentionally planned to maximized natural light (making use of passive solar energy) and the aesthetic view while minimizing disruption from the road. Proper insulation created an airtight space and a high efficiency wood burning fireplace was used to minimize emissions.

Walking our clients through the selection process helped them make decisions that would best meet their needs. Our clients were educating themselves (and us) on new environmentally-conscious design ideas that could be incorporated into their home. This helped to develop a valuable client-contractor partnership throughout the project.

The best part of the project is knowing that our clients are now living blissfully in their healthy home sanctuary.
